2023 Genesis GV60 Second Take Review: A stellar three-peat
The Hyundai Group has managed to put the EV segment on notice with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, and now it’s hoping that the Genesis GV60 will also have the same magic. The GV60 is based on the same platform as the Ioniq 5 and EV6, but it stands out with a higher level of uniqueness.
Compared to the Ioniq 5 and EV6, the GV60 does without any of the harsh lines that you get on the other two EVs. Instead everything is smooth and curvaceous. Overall the GV60 looks more like a tall hatchback, but it works. There are also the same Genesis design cues that you get on the rest of the family, like its signature headlights and taillights. At the rear there’s also a little zig zag in the c-pillar that adds a special touch.
Inside the interior is elevated over the Ioniq 5 and EV6 with higher quality materials and a pleasing design. The GV60 features two 12.3-inch screens, with the left display being a digital gauge cluster and the other for the infotainment system. The infotainment system can be operated by a dial on the center console or your fingers and overall its responsive and easy to use. Our only gripe is that it doesn’t feature wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
On the tech front, there’s also something really cool, the GV60 is able to set up different driver profiles that use biometric identification to identify the driver. On the driver’s side door there’s a facial recognition camera that will automatically open the doors if it knows who you are. A finger-print reader inside also makes sure that you are allowed to drive the GV60. Both systems alleviate the need for using a key to operate the GV60.
The interior also has some cool unique features, like the shift dial that rotates and becomes a lighted orb when the GV60 is off. You’ll also notice that there’s special “BOOST” button on the steering wheel, which unlocks more fun from the powertrain.
Speaking of the powertrain, the GV60 is powered by a two-motor electric set up and a 77.4-kWh battery pack. If you opt for the Performance trim level you get a nice 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. But there’s more, push that little Boost button on the steering wheel and the horsepower rating is bumped up to 483 hp for 10 seconds. With that much power on tap, it’s no surprise how fast the GV60 gets up to speed.
The Performance trim also adds a mechanical slip differential and an electronically controlled suspension. With those extra goodies, the GV60 is a lot of fun on those curvy back roads. The Sport mode also tightens up the suspension and makes the throttle more responsive. Body roll is pretty much nonexistent.
There are two trim levels to choose from: Advanced or Performance and each has a different driving range. The Advanced trim has a 248 mile driving range, while the Performance trim is slightly lower at 235 miles. Those specs aren’t going to set any new records.
The good news is that the GV60 gets the same 800-volt tech as the Ioniq 5 and EV6. The system is able to charge at a rate of 225 kW, which is fast enough to charge the GV60 from 10-80 percent in only 18 minutes.
The pricing for the 2023 Genesis GV60 starts at $59,985, including destination. The Performance trim is priced at $69,385.
At the end of the day, the Genesis GV60 is a great EV with its stylish exterior, pleasing interior and fun powertrain. Its price might be a bit steep, but if you can swing that price tag, you won’t be disappointed.
