When learning to drive it feels like there are a million and one things you need to remember. And honestly, it’s not far off from the truth! Unfortunately, we can’t list every single thing you need to know when learning to drive, but we do have a few tips that can help make the process easier.

As someone who is learning to drive, you may be feeling overwhelmed, and nervous, but also excited. Reputable driving school, Beverly Slater, has helped create this guide to help you remember some important things to do when learning to drive.

Prepare before your lessons

The best thing you can do when learning to drive is give yourself a head start from the very get go. Taking the time to research the basics of driving can help you understand what your instructor is saying in your first lesson. Having a basic understanding of how a car works and what the different gears mean can help you gain a better understanding of the things you’re about to learn.

Also, learning about the theory of driving as you go is important too. Giving yourself a headstart not only on the practical side of driving a car, but the theoretical side too. Learning as much as you can throughout can help you during your lessons, and eventually in both of your tests.

Learn from your mistakes and persevere

Another important thing to remember is that you will make mistakes, but you need to learn from them and push through. Accepting that mistakes and errors are part of learning will help you through your lessons. Mistakes will happen but what’s most important is what you make out of them. Dwelling on a mistake you made won’t make it easier, but learning from one will. When you mess up, you now know what you did wrong and what to do next time. Gaining experience at every hurdle.

Preserving is also crucial when it comes to learning to drive. Pushing through your setbacks and continuing to learn is so important when it comes to gaining a skill like driving. Listening to your instructor and applying their feedback will help you expand your knowledge

Practice outside of your lessons

Another key thing to remember when you start your driving lessons is to always practise what you know outside of lessons. If you have access to a car and someone you know is willing to accompany you, you should use your free time to practise. You could find an empty car park to practise the basics of what your driving instructor has taught you. This will refresh your memory and keep your skills fresh for when you have your next lesson. The person accompanying you does need to be 21 and have had  a driving licence for at least 3 years.

It’s also vital that you practise for your theory test too. Revising and constantly going over what you need to know for your theory test is an important part of learning to drive. The knowledge you know from books can also help you during your practical lessons. Giving you the best possible chance at passing both your driving test and your theory exam, first time.
